Vaseline Armor (2007) is a series of work in which I use Vaseline to make a body armor and a helmet. Treatment (2008) is an installation work in which I fill cracks on building walls with Vaseline. Both are visual realization of the protective and therapeutic significance of Vaseline, which I have come to associate, from early on in my life, as much more than a mere household medicine. In my childhood I had an accident in which my left hand was burned, and in the course of  its treatment and recovery Vaseline was applied to the burned area to protect and heal the scarred skin. Through this experience of the series of the events – the accident, the burn, the hospitalization, and the treatment and recovery – I came to associate Vaseline as a protective armor that protected both the mind and body that were scarred. It is interesting that the name Vaseline is derived from a combination of German Wasser (water) and Greek λαιον [elaion] (oil). Vaseline is basically oil, and as such it does not contain any water. When applied to the skin, it forms a thin sheet of oil and prevents skin moisture from evaporating. Vaseline thus creates and maintains the optimum condition of wetness for cell reproduction. In my work, Vaseline is often used as a metaphor for the therapeutic significance of water.
