닭은 십이지 가운데 열 번째 동물로써, 예로부터 새벽에 울리는 닭의 울음소리는 불길한 밤을 밀어내고 악귀를 쫓아냄으로써 새로운 아침을 맞이하게 하는 영적 소리로 여겨졌다. 더 나아가 민간신앙에서 이러한 닭의 낮과 밤의 전환적 역할은 닭이 달걀을 낳고 달걀은 닭이 되는 순환의 원리와 합쳐져 닭은 재생(Rebirth)적 동물로 신앙시되었다. 낮과 밤, 생과 사의 경계에서 끊임없는 순환의 촉매적 역할을 수행해온 닭은 나의 작업에서 인과관계로서의 시련과 극복을 의미한다. 이 작품은 병아리의 탄생을 기원하는 촛불과 그 촛불로부터 실제 전기에너지를 생산하는 발전기 그리고 그 촛불로부터 전기를 공급받아 전시기간 동안 닭을 부화시킬 부화기로 구성된다. 일반적으로 촛불은 염원이라는 정신적 사유의 상징물에 불과하지만, 나는 과학적인 방식을 통해 촛불의 작은 열로부터 전기에너지를 생산하고 병아리의 부화를 가능케 하는 실제 에너지원으로 쓰이게 한다. 이 작품은 정신과 물질, 인간과 자연의 폐쇄적 관계를 에너지의 발생과 흐름 그리고 탄생이라는 인과적 관계로 전환시킴으로써 이세상을 바라보는 좀더 확장된 사고체계를 제시한다.

The 10th animal of Twelve Earthly Branches, the rooster crow which sounds the morning has been seen as a spiritual sound which drives away the gloomy night and evil spirits, and invites the new morning. Such night and day transformative function of the rooster in folk belief, together with the principle of circulation in which the chicken lays eggs and eggs become chicken, the chicken came to be seen as an animal of rebirth. Functioning as a catalyst for the endless circulation in the boundary of night and day and life and death, the chicken signifies the trials and triumphs in human relationship in my work. This work consists of candles which pray for the birth of chicks, the generator which produces actual electrical energy from the candle lights, and the incubator which will hatch eggs with the electricity supplied from the candle lights throughout the exhibition period. While candles usually symbolize spiritual aspirations, I use it as a source of actual energy in which the small heat from the candle generates electrical energy and allows the eggs to hatch. This work transforms the confined relationship between body and mind and human and nature into cause and effect relationship between production and flow of energy and birth, proposing an expanded system of thought in looking at this world.
