Thomas Homer-Dixon, the writer of Environment, Scarcity, and Violence (2001) asserted that the environmental deficiency of water through precipitation stirs violence and strife in that region. This assertion, verified through objective data based on statistics, makes us think that water is not simply an imperative element needed to sustain life, but is also a healing catalyst for the heart and the mind which heals the emotionally numb heart and resolves discordance. My interest on the ‘curative meaning and aspiration in rain’, as continuously demonstrated in the past works Pray for Rain project (2008), Sweet Rain (2010), and Sweet Rain Maker (2014), is even more concretized in Wave Cloud (2014) shown in this exhibition. In this work, a type of mechanism which artificially creates sounds of rain, thunder and wind, functions as an element which constitutes the prayer for rain. It’s said that in shamanism rooted in Aztec civilization, shamans played instruments that sound similar to rain in the prayer for rain. Called a ‘rain maker’ or ‘rain stick’, this instrument is a long, hollow tube filled with a handful of adzuki beans, which has thorns arranged helically on its inside surface and makes a sound reminiscent of rain falling. I borrow the principle of the rain maker in the creation of a device which makes sounds of rain, wind and thunder, and I play such sounds as if to play an instrument. At a glance, this sound perfectly reproduces the actual sounds from nature, and is transmitted outside of the exhibition venue as radio frequency through an antenna. And the electricity through which the sender and amplifier transmit the radio frequency is supplied through a device which converts the subtle heat source of candle lights in the gallery into electrical energy. In his book The Flame of a Candle (1961), Gaston Bachelard describes that  ‘among all the matters in the world that arouse daydreams, the flame is the most profound image maker’. The small flame of a candle light makes us wish for something. With audience participation, the greater the number of candles in the candle generator, the more powerful the intensity of the transmission becomes, and ultimately the radio frequency of rain, wind and thunder spreads out with greater intensity. The frequency carrying sounds of rain, wind and thunder is transmitted through a massive antenna beyond the exhibition space, permeating  throughout the gallery, and reaching radios installed in other open spaces.
